Internet Bandwidth Limitations

Over the last few months there has been an ongoing saga between Shaw and their internet customers, this has developed over time as they have consistently threatened to move to billing people for going over the cap of 60GB/month.  The reason that they are doing this is because the larger companies (Bell & Rogers) are passing down the expenses.  Consumers feel that the CRTC should protect consumers and their right to what has effectively become an essential service (the internet.)  The CRTC originally made the decision to allow the larger companies with control over the cables in Canada to bill its wholesale customers at a usage based rate which caused the smaller companies to also be forced to adopt this form of billing.

So, in the end, Shaw is just passing its new expense on to the customers and their PR department needs to pass this message on to consumers.  This will not be easy because many customers (myself included) are wary of their internet providers trying to shaft them in the first place.  I believe that these harsh limits are not necessary and that Shaw will continue to make a healthy profit without billing their customers per gigabyte.  The CRTC will be forced by the population to repeal their original limits however Shaw will be left with unimpressed customers and will need to address this situation in the future.  I believe that their PR department needs to educate consumers more about these changes rather than just changing the policies on their customers and dealing with the fallout later.
